A few faculty and staff from Anoka-Ramsey Community College and St. Cloud Community & Technical College had the privilege of touring the Monticello nuclear power plant. During the tour, they received information on a variety of topics including the plant’s history, how it generates electricity at a technical level, the maintenance involved, and many of the safety concerns associated with it. The knowledge gained from this experience will be incorporated at the colleges in the facilities areas and in the classrooms, especially Environmental Science courses and the Energy Technical Specialist programs. Although all who toured that day were knowledgeable about power generation in different ways; the respect for the facility itself, the people who work there, and the power it generates were all increased due to this insightful tour.
